Short Course – 2040 Hands-on Introduction to iPads and iOS Part 1

When: Thursday 3rd & 10th September, 12:30pm – 2.30pm

Where: Anvil House, Level 1, Room 11

What: This practical hands-on course series is now conducted over two (two hours each) sessions and is aimed at the beginners and people new to the iPad. It will teach you how to setting up and getting to know the iPad and the iOS that drives it. This course is a repeat of the one in March – May 2015, for the benefit of new members since then. Part 2 starts on the Thursday 17 Sept, and Part 3 starts 1 Oct.

What you will learn in Part 1

  • Common types of Tablets.
  • Types of Tablet Operating systems,
  • Apple iOS and devices,
  • iPad hardware parts and names,
  • iPad power on and off, Sleep/Wake button,
  • Home Button, Volume Button and Side switch function,
  • Status Icons,
  • iPad setup,
  • Connecting to Wi-Fi,
  • Apple ID,
  • iCloud,
  • Your iPad name,
  • Intro to Settings,
  • Getting important information about your iPad About setting,
  • Screen capture,

This is also an opportunity to share with other SeniorNet members any hints or tips that can make computing easier and/or more interesting.

What: Windows 10 has been released.  It is a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 for a year after its  public release late August.

Come to this demonstration, see the new features, and become comfortable and competent with Windows 10 in about 20 minutes.

Hands-on Workshop using Gmail , Friday 14th & 21th August, 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm

What:  The purpose of this hands-on course is to set up an email account using the free web-based email programme Gmail, and explore the extra services this email programme offers

The only prerequisites are:
  • a basic knowledge of using a mouse or touch pad
  • access to a computer with a broadband connection
The course covers two days and the investment is $20 payable on the first day.

Learning Objectives

You will learn:
  • how to set up an email account 
  • where to find tools and adjust programme settings to suit individual taste
  • ways to send, receive and forward emails
  • filing emails and creating new folders
  • sending and opening an attachment
  • including pictures in emails
  • saving pictures to your computer
  • using an address book and transferring addresses from another email programme
  • setting up a calendar
  • saving files, pictures, etc to the web.

What: Dean Burt, Senior Manager Digital Operations, Strategy, Products, and Marketing, at Westpac NZ Limited, is an expert on all aspects of internet and mobile banking. He will demonstrate and discuss the key things we need to know about using the Internet for our personal banking and the basic rules we need to observe to stay safe when banking on-line.

Dean will also discuss some of the future developments happening in the mobile and online banking space. His comments are not specific to Westpac and apply broadly to all NZ banking institutions.

Dean is an excellent presenter and previous workshops he has run for us have been well attended, very interesting, and most helpful for members.

Wellington City Libraries website.

Use the classroom computers to learn how:
  •  check your library card online
  • use and get the best out of the catalogues to find items in the library
  •  reserve items online
  • to access special features available in the Easyfind Catalogue, including making your own  'wish lists' of items 
  • how to suggest items for the library to buy
