Workshop - Toys for Boys and Gadgets for Girls, Monday 6 July, 10.00 am - 12.00 pm

What: The session is a pot pourri of  technology developments and some  software and hardware thoughts. Those attending are invited to contribute with a demonstration of their new toys and gadgets.

The session covers
  • How to get a good deal on computers and their related technology 
  • Tips and tricks
  • Emerging toys and gadgets 
  • Review of ‘necessary’ basic (free) software 
  • Some ‘quirky’ but useful software 
  • New Google features 
  • Cloud storage 
  • Remote access tools

Clean your PC Workshop, Friday 3 July, 10.00 am - 12.00 pm

What: Alan Royal will go through the process of cleaning up, cleaning out and speeding up that slow PC.

He will introduce you to some tips, Windows built in applications and some freeware to help the process.

What: Learn what is a smart phone and its typical features.

Catch up with the more common types of smart phone and how to operate them

Hear about the inbuilt functions and how to use them such as Wi-Fi connectivity, security, emergency calls, texting, ring choices, calendar, using the camera function, etc.

Get some information about the must have and more common apps. Learn about widgets, creating folders and how to download to a smart phone

What: Faststone Image Viewer is  for more than just for viewing images.  The programme
  • has an innovative and easy to use screen. 
  • has a significant number of image editing functions. 
  • is not a replacement for Photoshop but.....it is a good way to view images and perform basic editing and correction tasks. 
  • is the programme of choice for Seniornet image viewing and editing. 
  • has no Adware or Spyware and is free for Home Users.
You will be taken through the interface tools with examples of how it can be used.

Are you having problems with your Android device, or just interested in learning more about it? If so, you are welcome to come along & ask questions.

Don't be shy. These sessions are specifically designed to help the beginner. Come and ask your questions so that we can help you get the most out of your phone or tablet. Even if you don’t have any questions yourself, still please come along as you may have the answer to someone else’s question.

If there is time, we may be able to give you individual help with your Android device.

These sessions are free for members. No registration is required.

What: This is an opportunity to learn and share with everyone welcome,  especially new SeniorNet members so don’t be shy come along and also meet up with other members.

No question is too outlandish or too elementary, all could lead to an answer.  The only 'silly' question is the one that is not asked.

This is also an opportunity to share with other SeniorNet members any hints or tips that can make computing easier and/or more interesting.

Some activity at the last meeting included :
  • A video was shown of an Ambulance Drone in action.  Wow the mind boggles!
  • A website, alternativeto.net was mentioned as being a site for members to visit.
  • An interesting discussion about Printers, with many tips and recommendations given including the purchasing of a  machine suitable to ones needs.
  •  A very interesting site Lynda.com for educational tutorials etc. was demonstrated and discussed.  
Other questions asked were also dealt with by some of the more experienced members who were in attendance.

Free Scamming Awareness Workshop: Protect yourself, protect your family

What: Age Concern will be leading a presentation on "a senior's guide to scams": Scamming via the phone and online (emails, international dating websites).

Find out how to surf the net safely, receive emails safely and protect yourself from scams.

Keiran O'Meara, Manager of Kiwibank, Kilbirnie, will provide some local 'real-life' examples that she's dealt with.

Other Topics Covered:
  • Identifying tell-tale red flags.
  • What are the top five reported scams?
  • What to do if you think you've been scammed.

Age Concern Wellington’s Staying Safe Driving Course for Seniors - Friday 26 June, Friday 17 July and Friday 31 July

When: Friday 26 June, Friday 17 July and Friday 31 July.  All three courses start at 9.45 a.m. and finish around 12.15 p.m.

Where: Anvil House, Level 1, Meeting Room 2, 138 – 140 Wakefield Street

What: This is an NZTA approved, classroom based, refresher workshop, for senior road users.

Previous attendees have found these workshops enjoyable and extremely helpful.

There is a charge of $10 payable on the day which includes morning tea or coffee, scones, and NZTA hand-outs.  Places are limited.

Twenty Third Annual General Meeting of SeniorNet Wellington Incorporated – Wednesday, 17 June 2015 commencing at 10 am

AGM papers have been sent to members.

Notice has been given to members that the Twenty Third Annual General Meeting of SeniorNet Wellington Incorporated will be held in the Amora 1 Room, Ground Floor, Amora Hotel, 170 Wakefield Street, Wellington on Wednesday, 17 June 2015 commencing at 10 am.

A copy of the full agenda and supporting papers were included with the Notice given. The full content can also be downloaded from this website. (See “AGM 2015” on the front page of this website).

Members have been asked to advise their attendance by emailing wellingtonseniornet@gmail.com, or by phoning the SeniorNet Office 473 1510 (10 am-12 noon, or leaving a message if the office is unattended).
Register on or before 10 June 2015 and attend the AGM to be in a draw for a 1TB external hard drive.

Supervised Practice Sessions

SeniorNet Classrooms 11 & 12 are open every Monday during term (except on public holidays), between 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm, for members to use the SeniorNet machines for practice and revision.

Tutors will be available to help anyone who may have attended a lesson or workshop and feel they need  a little more help.

We encourage you to bring your own machines if possible.   Please remember that some programmes may need a password to open, so bring your passwords.

The cost is $5.

What: An opportunity for SeniorNet members to take a guided tour of the Central Library to learn of the diversity of resources and information.
Surprise yourself! Understand what’s available on each floor. The tour will include:-
Get a quick overview what is available at the Library

  • Observe the catalogue area and see how it works
  • On the first floor see what’s available, maybe try the computers and access online resources
  • On the second floor check out past papers, ancestry, etc
  • Ask questions at any time.
