Refresher Course - Basic Computing Skills, Thursday 10 April 2014, from 12 noon – 2.00 pm

When: Thursday 10 April 2014, from 12 noon – 2.00 pm

Where: Anvil House, Level 1,  Room 11

What: This short 2 hour course is an opportunity for members to revise some basic computing skills. Participants will be asked to identify which topics they would like to revise with their tutor. Topics can cover E-mail, Internet or preparation of documents.

As these are small classes with numbers limited to 5 please register ASAP with Sandra Thorn at saonbeauchamp@xtra.co.nz .

When registering please –

  • confirm you are a member of Wellington SeniorNet
  • advise your phone number and E-mail address 
  • advise which Microsoft operating system you use i.e. Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1.

What: Max Sullivan from the the NZ Electronic Text Centre (NZETC) at Victoria University will be the speaker. His presentation will include, besides an introduction to the Centre:

  • What is the NZETC?
  • Who runs the website
  • Basic technical overview
  • How to find content on the website; browse the collection, use the search function, external search engines (eg: Google)
  • Key collections (eg: WW2, Cyclopedia, Creative writing, Captain Cook)
  • Reusing our content in your research (Creative commons licence)
  • Downloading texts (PDFs and ereaders)
  • Other useful services (eg: digitalnz.org).
This is a free session open to all members and should not be missed.

Workshop - Windows 8.1 in 20 minutes - Tuesday 1 April, 10.00 am - 12.00 pm

What: Make yourself comfortable and competent with Windows 8.1 in about 20 minutes. Find out how to make it look and work like XP, Vista and Windows 7. Learn how to use the great search tools, keyboard short cuts, tiles and other new tools. Alan Royal will facilitate.

Workshop - 'Up to speed with Facebook', Thursday 3 April, 10 am to 12 pm

When: Thursday 3 April,10 am to 12 pm

Where: Anvil House, Level 1, Room 2

What: Back for the fourth time, David Barrow, Communications Manager at Social Development Partners and Tai Samaeli from ACE Aotearoa will both bring you up to speed with Facebook.

Many are using this tool to stay in touch with their family online. By the end of the session you’ll be keen to get started (if you haven’t already), you’ll know how to use it, why you want to and also be aware of some of the risks.

As the previous session had a large carry-over of members wanting to attend this popular session there are only a limited number of seats available. First come, first served. If you do not register and get accepted you will definitely not be able to attend.

Workshop - How to install and use Skype, Tuesday 18 March, 10.00 am -12 noon

What: The workshop will look at the Skype program, which can be used to make calls (both voice and video) over the internet, for free.

How to download the software, install it and get the program up and running, so that you can talk to family and friends, as well as see them if you have a web camera, will be demonstrated.

What:  We will have our usual question and answer session on any aspect regarding "cameras", photo enhancement and "what went wrong with my image".

Bring your camera and user guide (manual).

This month we will be looking at the basics of flash photography, explaining what the various inbuilt flash modes mean and how we can you these features to produce better photographs

Got some photos you have taken over the holidays? Bring them along and share with us. In particular if anyone who attended last months Digicam meeting has taken photographs using any of the shooting modes we discussed, we'd love to see them.
