What: David Dobson will tell us about his experiences and give tips on things he learned from writing and publishing his latest book.

Following this, John Nimmo who is ready to publish his new family book, will share some of his experiences and things he has learned in getting to this final stage over the past several years.

We will also review the past year's programme and discuss our members' ongoing interests, to ensure we develop an interesting programme for 2012.

How to avoid the worst consequences of a computer disaster - backing up and restoring your computer simplified workshop - Tuesday 29 November 2011 - 10.00 am to 12.00 noon.

Where:  Anvil House, Level 1, Meeting Room 2,  138 - 140 Wakefield Street, Wellington.

What:  We all know we are meant to back up material on our computers in case of some sort of disaster but how many of us know what to do or do it?

In this Workshop Tony Doogue will provide you with a simple explanation of what is involved and what to do to back up your computer or restore it in case of a disaster.  The emphasis will be on basic backing up and restoring but links will be given to sources of more detailed information. 

If you are confused about backing up or restoring or are having difficulties with one or the other why not see if he can help you.

Hands-on Workshop using Gmail and Igoogle homepage, Thursday 24 November and 1 December, 12.00 pm - 2.00 pm


When: Thursday 24 November and 1 December, 12.00 pm - 2.00 pm

What: The purpose of the workshop is to set up:
  • an email account using free Google webmail (Gmail) 
  • a personal homepage using Igoogle.
The only prerequisites are:
  • a basic  knowledge of how to use a mouse or touch pad 
  • access to a computer with a broadband connection.
Cost per session $5 payable on the day. The first five to register will be accepted.

Session 1 – setting up a Gmail account and exploring Google tools.
Session 2 – setting up a personal homepage using Igoogle and Google gadgets

Maintenance of your PC Workshop, Tuesday 22 November10 am - 12 pm


When: Tuesday 22 November 10 am - 12 pm

What: The workshop will take you through e.g. a sequence of creating a restore point, backing up, updating, cleaning, optimising and defragmenting your machine.

A disc is available containing the free programmes necessary to manage the above processes.

The cost of the workshop is $5 payable at the workshop. The disc, if required, will be available for an extra $5.

Announcing a new 'hands-on' workshop: Fix up Your Archive Photos commencing Thursday 17 November 10 am


Background: This hands-on workshop is to help members improve/correct their archive images using the free GIMP programme.
Workshop numbers: this is to be up to 5 pupils, assisted by at least 2 volunteer tutors.
Location: Anvil House, level 1, Room 11 at SeniorNet.
Number of Workshop sessions: up to 3, weekly (each 2hrs) starting at 10 am on Thurs 17th Nov, Thurs 24th Nov and Thurs 1st Dec.
Cost per session: $10, collected on the day.
Material to bring: bring the digital image(s) you want to work on. These should be on your flash drive. If required, your Artwork can be scanned for you before you start. The cost of the first session will include a CD handout that has all the course material, but it is recommended that pupils come with a hard copy of the GIMP notes ('Using GIMP to restore images') as a hands-on reference during their work. These notes were provided at the earlier GIMP workshops, and can also be downloaded from the SeniorNet web site, and clicking on the ‘Go to the Workshop Notes Page’ and then on ‘GIMP’) Alternatively the notes can be made available at cost (approx $12) at the start of the first session.

Workshop - Finding tutorials, manuals and techniques, Friday 18 November 10.00 am -12 noon

What: Have you tried to locate a tutorial for your software, or a particular subject within that software e.g how to find symbols in Microsoft Word?

Are you missing a manual for a piece of equipment that you own?

Do you want to learn about a particular subject?

Alan Royal will guide you through some ways to answer the above questions and provide a range of helpful links.
