Workshop - Restoring Images using GIMP, Tuesday 24 May 10.00 am - 12.00 pm

What: This workshop will show how the free GIMP imaging programme can restore/improve your archive images and photos. John Foden will host this workshop, using a prepared manual which can be provided at cost (see below) or downloaded free from the SeniorNet website  then 'Go to Workshop Notes page' then 'Workshop Notes: GIMP'
           
Costs:

  • Workshop fee: $5 (at the door).
  • GIMP manual(optional), 96 pages, bound: $12 (at the door).

 Numbers are limited to 25, and registrations are to be made to John Foden (4792487, john.foden@paradise.net.nz ). When registering please indicate the following:


  1. Do you require a copy of the GIMP manual? (Note that this manual is identical to that published earlier)

Digicam (Digital camera) SIG. (Special Interest Group), Wednesday 18 May, 10.00 am - 12.00 pm

What: Please bring your questions on any aspect of photography. Hopefully we can help in  answering them.

We will also, time allowing

  • have a further look at the importance of filing and the different systems.
  • demonstrate some web sites that are well worth viewing,from learning to the serious amateur. A nice "primer" is http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/ with  heaps of wonderful images
  • look at how to convert for free, images of pages of text to a Word document
  • demonstrate some free online image editors. 

The Digicam sessions are free to all members.

Scanning Workshop,Thursday 19 May 10 am - 12 pm


When: Thursday 19 May 10 am - 12 pm

Where: Anvil House, Level 1, Meeting Room 2

What: A short explanation of how a scanner works will be given followed by a demonstration using the SeniorNet Canon scanner. I will include scanning photographs and documents and then turning the document image into editable text using the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software Omnipage that came with the Canon.

A CD will be provided with information on scanning and using OCR plus PhotoEd and OmniPage programmes.

NOTE This copy of Omnipage is not by any means the modern version.

Maximum allowed in the room 25; Charge $5 payable at the door; Ring Don Paterson at 232 7767 to register.

We wish to test the response to a follow up to the scanning and GIMP workshops with a hands-on session. A max of five participants who would each bring a few photos and receive help to scan using the SeniorNet Canon and then improve the resultant file on the computer. A nominal charge, yet to be decided, would be made.

Writing & Publishing (W&P) SIG, Wednesday 11 May, 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm


When: Wednesday 11 May, 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm.

Where:  Anvil House, Level 1, Meeting Room 2

What: John Sullivan from the National Library will discuss how people can search for and use, images held in the National Library. He will also give us the latest information on how we can access this material during the present changes to the Library's storage facilities. This will be a very interesting and helpful session for members looking for suitable pictures to support and add interest to their stories.        

We are privileged to have this speaker. It will be a lively and entertaing session - guaranteed!

Come early to get a good seat (or any seat at all).

The Writing & Publishing sessions are free to members.

Course vacancies.


There are vacancies on the Email and Internet course which commences on Thursday 5 May 2011 at 2.15pm.   This course covers the Outlook Express email program and will include reference to creating, sending, receiving and formatting emails as well as attaching photos and other items to them.  The use of the Internet will also be fully demonstrated.

Please contact Keith Kenderdine kenderkb@xtra.co.nz if you can attend this course.  The cost is $55 and the course is for 8 weeks.
