Computer Recycling Day (eDay) 4 October 2008 Westpac Trust Stadium

eDay (4 October 2008) is a free annual computer recycling day aimed at reducing the amount of toxic computer equipment and electronic waste dumped in our landfills. It will be held at Westpac Trust Stadium (Waterloo Quay Car Park Entrance) between 9 am and 3 pm.

Only household electronic waste is accepted. The following items can be dropped off on eDay:
  • computer monitors
  • desktops
  • networking equipment
  • speakers
  • printers and scanners
  • keyboards, mice and cables
  • mobile phones and chargers.
The equipment collected is either reused or disassembled for recycling of materials. Last year, 7,000 New Zealand households disposed of over 400 tonnes of electronic waste on eDay.

Free off-peak travel for SuperGold Card holders

SuperGold and SuperGold Veterans Card
More than 500,000 SuperGold Card holders around New Zealand will be eligible for free off-peak public transport travel from next week, Prime Minister Helen Clark and Transport Minister Annette King announced today.
The Government is providing funding of $72 million over four years ($18 million a year) for the SuperGold Card free off-peak travel scheme for card holders.

"Most regional councils around the country are ready to roll out travel concessions from Wednesday 1 October to SuperGold Card holders to enable free off-peak travel on bus, train and, where applicable, harbour ferry services within a region. See more here.

What: John Cook has now found out how to print very large characters when you are typing  a WORD document (remember this little problem was brought up recently in an earlier Q&A session). He is going to share the secret with you when you come along!

GO Wellington bus services - Disruption to service Monday, 22 September

GO Wellington bus services will be disrupted on this day due to a stopwork meeting of the Wellington Tramways Union.

          o Full service will be available until 9 am
                + There will be no service between 10 am and 2 pm
                + Limited services between 9 am-10 am and 2 pm-4 pm
                + Full service will resume at 4 pm
                + School bus services may be affected.   

The following services will operate as normal: Valley Flyer, Runcimans, Newlands Coach Services, Mana Coach Services, TranzMetro and Wellington Cable Car.

Music, audio media Workshop using Audaciiy, Wednesday September 17 11 am - 12 pm

What: The audio side of our computers is one that is not well utilised. Don Picken will introduce you to a few things you can do audio-wise with your computer. Audacity is the name of some good freeware software. A demonstration will be given to show you some of its capabilities.

Now is the time to think about what courses you want to do and fill in your application form.

 Don't forget to indicate your preferred days and times, and mark if you have the XP or Vista operating system, also if you have the 2003 or  2007  version of Word on your computer.

The earlier you get your Application Forms in, the easier it makes our jobs organising you into classes.

 Note that our course policy is 'first in, first served.'

What: Alan Royal will discuss the merits of using the free Microsoft Photo Story 3, with which you can create slideshows and presentations using your digital images. With a single click, you can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures, add stunning special effects, soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. You can also personalise images with titles and captions.

Reasonable file size makes it easy to send your photo stories in an e-mail. The stories can be watched on your TV or computer.

Bring along your digital camera and related questions and we will try and give you an answer.

What: Geoffrey Moss is a successful author and a long time member of SeniorNet. Please refer to his website, www.mossassociates.co.nz for details of his books and publications which have been published in over 82 editions, by 30 publishers, in 18 countries, and in 11 languages!

Using his last book as an example, Geoffrey will take us through the series of stages from preparing copy for the designer, to selecting designs for the front and back covers and spine, to final proofing and for the printer, converting the book to an e-book, and converting the e-book into an e-learning programme. Geoffrey will make use of his website and there will be plenty of time for discussion and your questions. We are fortunate in having access to Geoff'rey's expertise and experience. This will be a very interesting meeting.

What: The workshop will look at the Skype program which can be used to make calls (both voice and video) over the internet for free. How to download the software, install it and get the program up and running so that you can talk to family and friends, as well as see them if you have a web camera, will be demonstrated.

The cost of the workshop is $5 payable at the door.

What: The workshop will take you through a sequence of creating a restore point, backing up, updating, cleaning, optimising and defragmenting your machine.

A disc is available containing the free programmes necessary to manage the above processes.

The cost of the workshop is $5 payable at the workshop. The disc, if required, will be available for an extra $5.
